This is a humble, yet inwardly bold museum in La Boca. Its spacious, multi-floored rooms are brilliantly painted with bold colors, waking up spirits and life. The art that is presented is nothing short of spectacular with flame filled depression-era scenes, smoldering foundry depictions, and solemnly classic portraits.

Inaugurated in 1938, this building was built by the Department of Education on land donated by Bentio Quinquela Martín.  One of Martín’s clauses on the donation of the land requires the main floor to be used as a school and the upper floors for a museum. Thus, that is the current arrangement, tricking many tourists who aren’t aware of the location. At the entrance take the doors to the left where you’ll be greeted and asked to pay the $3AR entrance fee or $1AR for students with documentation of studies.

The upstairs patio is equally interesting as the museum itself. In 1996, the upstairs was inaugurated to exhibit Argentine sculpture artists. Follow a thin metal staircase to the top and get a view of the multi-leveled outdoor rooms that house local sculpture and provide varying views of the city and a birds eye view of La Boca. The view from the top of this building provides one with the reality of poverty weaved into this neighborhood, often hidden from the hustle and low glamour of Caminito.

Don’t walk by this museum.  It’s easy to do, as the pale-green exterior appears to be a municipal building, but its worth spending an hour of the day soaking up Argentine art.
