Contemporary art came to La Boca in 1996 and it plans to stay.  Fundación Proa is located on the popular strip of Avenida Pedro de Mendoza just around the corner from Caminito, convenient to stop in on a whim, but easy to miss. The stark-white, classic 19th century home, remodeled by Milan-based Caruso-Torricelaa Architetti, blends into the classic street on the old port and stands out amongst the brightly colored corrugated tin that makes La Boca famous.

Fundación Proa is a maze of large, open rooms that can transform to exhibit art, sculpture, theatre, poetry readings, music, or rarities such as Mapuche silverwork. The dramatic white walls allow for both Argentine and international artists to use the space freely. Those that have passed though include Sol Lewitt, Lucio Fontana, Mario Merz, and Diego Rivera among others.

Checkered black and white floors set the stage for the Coffee Room, a place designed to let one sit, relax and contemplate all while enjoying good coffee and local reading materials.  This is a good place to research past and upcoming events and plan your next move through the museum.  If there’s an exhibit in the video room, check it out as it’ll surely be a unique experience.

The rooftop patio steals attention providing extensive, sobering views of La Boca and the throbbing Capital Federal.  Visitors will surely be affected by the profundity of the sharp angular edges and wide open space.  In summer months, poetry readings and exhibits are presented on cool evenings, making for a deliciously new experience in a city that has seems to have seen it all.
