Introduction to Buenos AiresBuenos Aires is the capital and largest city in Argentina with a population of 2.7 million porteños (or people of the port). Located on the southern shore of the Rió de La Plata, 100km upriver from the Atlantic Ocean, Buenos Aires lies directly across the river from neighboring Colónia, Uruguay. In the outlining areas of the city or provincias (suburbs), reside an additional 12.4 million inhabitants, more than one-third the overall 40 million population of all Argentina. Known as the 'Paris of the South', Buenos Aires is a sophisticated mix of cultural influences including Italian, French, Spanish and English, and, more recently, the North Americans or yanquis (Yankees), as the porteños refer to people from the United States.
